Flying into Valencia for the Costa Blanca: when VLC beats Alicante

Why a Valencia flight sometimes costs less or fits your schedule better than Alicante, how arrivals work at VLC, and the real drive-time difference to Calpe and Benidorm.

Most people booking a Costa Blanca trip default to Alicante — it is the closest airport to Calpe and Benidorm, so that makes sense. But widen the search by a few days, or check a different month, and a second option often turns up: Valencia. Sometimes the fare is simply lower, sometimes it is the only direct flight from your home airport. Here is why that happens, how arrivals actually work at Valencia airport, and how much longer the drive to the coast really is if you fly through VLC.

Why Valencia sometimes makes more sense

Alicante is a resort airport, built mostly around charter and low-cost traffic — from mid-July through the end of August demand spikes along with prices, and seats on the dates you want can simply sell out. Valencia is a different kind of airport, with steadier year-round traffic from business and regional routes, so its schedule is not tied nearly as tightly to peak beach weeks. That plays out in practice: outside the summer peak, a Valencia fare is often cheaper than a comparable Alicante one, and from some origin cities — parts of Germany, the UK, or Scandinavia, for instance — Valencia has a direct route where Alicante would mean a connection. The gap shows up most clearly in spring and late autumn, when resort demand eases off and Valencia tends to win on price for a similar flight time.

What arrivals look like at Valencia airport

Valencia’s airport is officially Aeropuerto de Valencia, often called by the name of the town next door, Manises, and it carries the code VLC on your ticket. It is one large terminal building that merged what used to be separate T1 and T2 halls, so there is no hunting for the right terminal the way there can be at bigger hubs. The one thing worth knowing is that a small separate regional terminal building sits alongside it for turboprop regional flights — if you are on a small regional aircraft, it is worth checking your ticket for which building you actually land in.

Arrivals sit on the ground floor: Llegadas / Arrivals signage leads straight to baggage claim, and a single exit funnels everyone into one meeting hall with car rental desks, currency exchange, and a handful of cafés. The logic is close to how pickups work at Alicante’s airport — one exit, one meeting area — just inside a larger building. A Transfer Calpe driver waits right there, past the baggage claim exit, holding a sign with your name, and tracks your flight number free of charge — if it runs late, the pickup time shifts automatically, no calls or extra fees needed from you.

The real drive-time tradeoff to Calpe and Benidorm

The number that actually matters when weighing Valencia against Alicante is not the ticket price — it is the road afterward. Valencia to Calpe runs about 130 km on the AP-7 motorway, typically 1h30 to 1h40 depending on traffic. Compare that with the roughly 55-minute run from Alicante (full pricing and details on the Alicante-Calpe transfer page) — the gap is close to an hour, worth building into your plans for arrival day, especially on a late flight.

Benidorm is the one that trips people up: since it is the bigger, more southerly resort, it is tempting to assume the drive from Valencia is shorter. It is not. Benidorm actually sits south of Calpe — closer to Alicante, farther from Valencia — so the drive from Valencia airport takes roughly the same time and covers a few more kilometers than the run to Calpe. Flying into Valencia does not save any drive time on either route; if anything, every Costa Blanca resort ends up noticeably farther than it would be from Alicante.

That leaves a simple rule of thumb: if Valencia’s fare or schedule is meaningfully better, the extra hour on a smooth AP-7 motorway is usually worth it. If prices and departure times are close between the two airports, Alicante is the more convenient pick simply because it sits closer to the coast.

Whichever airport you land at, Transfer Calpe works the same way: a fixed price agreed before the trip, a driver waiting in the arrivals hall with a name sign, free flight tracking, and standard luggage included in the fare. Valencia is not a special request — it is a normal “From” option in the booking form.
