Anyone planning a Costa Blanca trip runs into the same question sooner or later — rent a car, or book an airport transfer? There is no universal answer; it depends on where you are headed and how you want to spend your time. But both options carry a real price tag that rarely matches what you see at first glance. Here is an honest breakdown of both.
What a rental car really costs
The daily rate advertised online is only part of the bill. Most rental counters in Alicante do not include zero-excess insurance in that base price — the cover that actually protects you from being charged for every scratch and stone chip — it is offered as a pricier add-on, and without it the counter holds a security deposit of several hundred euros on your card for the whole rental period. Then there is fuel: almost every agency works on a full-to-full basis, and if you do not manage to top up before returning the car at the airport, you pay the difference at an inflated rate. And in Calpe or Benidorm during peak season, parking near hotels and along the seafront is either paid or simply full, so part of the holiday goes into circling the block looking for a space.
There is also a cost that does not show up on any invoice — fatigue. Getting behind the wheel in an unfamiliar country straight after a long flight, working out roundabouts, Spanish road signs, and how the AP-7 toll gates actually operate, is not most people’s idea of a good start to a holiday, especially when the flight lands late at night.
What a fixed-price transfer gets you
A transfer works the other way round — you know the price before you fly, and it does not change, not because of traffic near Benidorm and not because your flight lands late. From Alicante to Calpe, for example, the AP-7 drive covers about 80km in around 55 minutes, and the price for the whole car, not per seat, runs from €70 to €110 depending on the vehicle class and number of passengers, with no meter and no add-on charges. A driver meets you in arrivals holding a name sign, tracks your flight number, and adjusts the pickup time for free if you are delayed. On arrival, you are dropped right at the hotel or villa entrance, with no parking search and no map-reading with a tired child in the back seat and suitcases stacked on the pavement.
When renting genuinely wins
It would be dishonest to claim a transfer always wins, because it does not. If your trip covers several Costa Blanca towns rather than a single base — Calpe, Javea, Moraira, and inland villages in the same holiday — or if you are staying two or three weeks and want the freedom to explore on your own schedule, whether that is the Algar waterfalls, Guadalest, or hillside wineries, a rental car gives flexibility a transfer simply cannot match. In that case it often makes more sense to pick the car up locally rather than at the airport on day one. Plenty of travelers combine both approaches, taking a transfer on arrival and departure days and renting only for the middle stretch of the trip.
When a transfer wins
If your holiday is a single base, such as a week in Calpe with no town-hopping, a late or exhausting arrival, or a trip with kids and a full boot of luggage, a transfer is almost always the smarter call, both financially and in terms of stress. You are not driving straight off a plane, not hunting for a parking space in August, and you know the exact price before you even book your flights. You can check pricing by car class, passenger count, and arrival time on the Alicante–Calpe route page.
Choosing for your own trip
If you are on the fence, the honest way to decide is to price out the rental with every add-on — insurance, fuel, parking — and compare it against a transfer’s fixed price for your actual dates. The gap is often smaller than it first looks, and a transfer saves considerably more hassle than the money alone would suggest. At Transfer Calpe, we run fixed-price transfers from Alicante and Valencia airports across the whole Costa Blanca, with no prepayment required — if you would rather skip driving on arrival day and rent a car only for the middle of your stay, message us on WhatsApp or Telegram and we will quote an exact price in five to ten minutes and meet you right on schedule.
